But that is the final consequence of religion.
Man is self centered and power-hungry by birth. That is why capitalism works, you allow people to satisfy that hunger, but in a frame of laws and standards. Communism didn't work because someone will always strive for power over others, it's the way human civilization has worked since forever.
Cults are just people, who bend their religion to extremes to achieve their personal goals, be they political power or just mental stimulation. That is what man does, and there is nothing you can do to change it.
There may be a bright side to religion, but it's nothing that can't be deprived from regular, healthy atheism. Believe in humanity. Believe in what you see, and what can be proven. Believe in yourself, but believe in your friends, your family, your coworkers.
Our intellect is what brought us to this level of awareness, and this intellect is what takes us further. Religion is denial.
