Just because gunsmoke doesn't abuse his power doesn't mean he doesn't have it.
And, as I stated, the reason we have class leaders is to effectively delegate gunsmoke's duties that he doesn't have the time or detailed knowledge to do himself. Gunsmoke is still indirectly in charge of everything the class leaders do tho, since they act on his behalf. He is also responsible for appointing those class leaders.
I argue that gunsmoke has complete and unlimited power in the guild because he does.
Sharing power at the top is never a good idea IMO, and why successful organizations don't do it. Why you may ask? I'll tell you.
Say you had another person with the title "Assistant Guild Master". This person did things a bit differently than guns, and was popular with a certain group of members, because he catered to them more than another group. However, he was less popular with another group of members, because he didn't cater specifically to their interests. Soon, you start to develop factions within the guild, with each faction loyal to their particular leader. Soon, this "assistant" gets it in his head that he could do things a lot better than guns, and decides that it's "in the best interest of the guild" to be the overall leader.
Of course the people on his side think this is great, and the people on guns' side don't think it's too hot. I think you see where i'm going with this. The guild splits, and both sides end up with not enough members to do anything, people go their seperate ways, unable or unwilling to revert to the way things were.
This is why it's better to have 1 person with power. With that power, if such a person were to begin to get ideas about creating divisions within the guild, gunsmoke /gremoves them before it becomes a problem. To quote Tony Soprano "Nip it in the bud". I've seen it done.
To summarize, you are confusing authority in subordinate positions over matters that involve day to day operations with absolute authoriy, i.e. who has the final say. You are also confusing tyranny with authoritarian government. Gunsmoke is no tyrant, or you are quite correct, we would all be somewhere else
