Thought I would post a clip from my daily life drawing.
And broke it down a bit to show the process.
The sketch. Usually done in pencil. This was straight in Photoshop. Size was 1500 height canvas.
Step 2 is undercolor. For normal comic art, "flats" is basically this step.
Raise the lineart to its own layer with transparent "white".
For comic work you use precise flat colors for each form. Making sure no shape shares a tone. As the flats are mostly for selecting. This can be done with more painting methods too. As being able to select shapes fast is pretty nice.
In this case I wasnt careful however and just was laying down the basic tones.
Then added soft hightlights and shadows.
Step 3 is the over color. More detailed tones are laid down over the lineart. Its not entirely required to cover up the lineart. you can always erase it if you dont want it. And sometimes it helps define shapes/texture anyway.
Step 4 is details. Hard lines are readded. Lineart is redrawn as needed to form edges.
