Vista is ok.

Intel's Core Duo processors are so much better than anything amd has out now. Get something with a Core 2 Duo or Quad Core.

Nvidia is doing better atm then Ati.

It all comes down to this arathil:

nVidia is now > ATI

Should you get a 7950GT or an 8800 Series? Well, do you want to play directx 10 games? If yes get the 8800 Series. If you don't care, ge tthe 7950GT.

XP ~ Vista

If you want to use directx 10 you have to use vista. Although vista upon release had quite a few features that made people wanna kick puppies, they have fine tuned them to be not quite so annoying. If you don't give a damn about directx 10, then xp will perform better with wow BC... Keep in mind WotLK will probably be a dx10 game.

Intel > AMD (Sort of)

You can get a nice mobo, Intel core 2 duo processor (dollar per unit of performance, Intel > AMD right now... we'll see in a couple months) 2 gigs of Corsair xms2 DDR2, and that video card for under 1,000 bucks. You will probably even have room in your budget for a nice new power supply (which you'll need) if you salvage your case and old drives.
